Hello this is Mary Bowen. Today I'm going to walk you through how to edit a video using Apple's iMovie. Before we go into launching iMovie though I want to talk about the importance of learning how to take care of drives.
Right here you see have I'v inserted my camera drive. You can't just insert drives and pull them out you actually have to learn how to eject them properly. So you see if I left click here and click it ejects and that means it's safe to pull the drive out of the computer. Not doing that will cause possibly losing content on drives and footage so it's very important to learn how to properly eject a drive.
So now I'm going to go ahead and launch iMovie. When you first open iMovie, you will be in the your library of all your projects. So if I click "new project", it'll give you an option for either starting a new movie or a new trailer. In this case we're going to work on a movie so click the one that says "New Movie". It'll open you up into your work space. You can see here this spot is a timeline and this is this the preview screen and over here is where your content will be after you've uploaded it.
We're going to go ahead and upload media. Click this little download button and right here I can locate the drive. It's going to pull up all the footage that I have on that drive. We're going to edit this movie here and so I'm going to grab just a few of the first scenes. I'm going to use the shift key while I select. I'm just going to do all the ones from this shoot day.
Then I'm going to import and then they're going to show up in the library on the left. If you see the little loading symbol they're not officially in there until that has completed. So I'm going to give this a minute because it'll probably take a little bit.
Okay so it looks like all the footage is ready and in here. It's all loaded and now I'm going to eject the drive. Now it's safe to pull out so I can actually take it out and what I'm going to do is now put in my audio drive. This is not necessarily always the case. We use a camera that takes in the visual and then we use an audio recorder that takes in the audio. That means that I'm going to need to match the audio.
If you don't record on separate devices, your audio is going to be already attached to your footage and you can go ahead and start editing, but in my case though I have to go get my audio tracks. Again, I'm going to grab just a few of these from this shoot day.
I'm going to drag and drop my first clip into the timeline. You can see here if I roll my mouse over it it plays it back. Can you see that big cursor down there? That's where the editing all takes place and I'm going to drag and drop the audio as well and you can see that they are down here I have to match the bumps.
What I mean by matching the bumps is that once you have both your audio and video uploaded you will be able to see both of the audio tracks on each of the clips. Since they are the same takes, you these bumps are going to be identical. So what you need to do is match these two tracks by dragging the audio track until it matches the audio of the video track.
If I match them up perfectly and play it back to myself I can hear if one's on or off and I adjust it from there. Just mess with the audio until it matches perfectly. Once it's matched, I'm going to turn the audio of the camera off and that kind of tells me that I have matched this clip and it's perfect now.
So I can just drag over this clip here and cutoff some of the goofy beginning and same thing down here I can clip this long audio here. Of course this audio goes to a different clip - I can tell because of how long it is. So if I go here I can left click and I get some options. I'm going to split the clip and I click it here and it splits at the location of the curser.
I'm going to go ahead and get all this prepared and then I'll come back after it's all been matched so this is a good time just to take a look at your own footage and try to match the audio or get it organized in a way that will be easier to edit. Give me a minute and I'll be back with it all ready.
